The Louisiana Housing Alliance (LHA) is a nonprofit statewide coalition working to ensure the preservation and production of quality affordable housing for low and moderate income Louisianans and those with special needs.

The devastation to the state’s housing stock resulting from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 highlighted the need for nonprofit housing networks, working independently of one another, to collaborate. The movement around hurricane recovery and working in areas suffering widespread destruction provided an opportunity to identify statewide housing challenges and opportunities.

In January 2006, the National Low Income Housing Coalition convened a meeting in New Orleans with housing advocates, social service providers and housing providers, the result of which was the decision to create a statewide advocacy organization that could strengthen the position of local and regional advocates and providers. The Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO) assumed the initial responsibility for developing and staffing LHA, and in 2007 LHA was formally incorporated and became a 501(c)3 organization.

As the only housing policy and technical assistance organization operating statewide to support Louisiana’s affordable housing partners, LHA represents a unified voice for housing providers and advocates who provide services critical to the state’s economic and social well-being. These partners are the cornerstone for the production and preservation of affordable rental units, as well as expanding options for homeownership, for low-wealth families, and LHA is honored to serve and support them in this important work.
